The Italian Greyhound Rescue Charity

The Italian Greyhound Rescue Charity was registered with the Charity Commission on the 7th June 2004 to provide comprehensive rescue and welfare for Italian Greyhounds and Cross Italian Greyhounds.

The Charities aims and objectives are:-

  • To relieve the suffering of Italian Greyhounds in need of care and attention and in particular, to provide and maintain rescue homes for pedigree or crossed Italian Greyhounds and to facilitate their rehoming.
  • To ensure that Italian Greyhounds in need of veterinary care and attention receive the appropriate care and treatment and to educate the public as to breed requirements in order to promote responsible ownership and positive health of Italian Greyhounds.
  • To promote the advancement of education and science by furthering research into diseases and health issues affecting Italian Greyhounds.

Italian Greyhound Rescue Charity cares for Italian Greyhounds and Italian Greyhound cross breed dogs that have fallen upon hard times.

It maybe that their carers are too ill to continue to look after them or perhaps these gentle little dogs have been abandoned to their own devices.  Where necessary we provide care and attention and in particular find suitable foster and/or adoption homes for them, facilitating lifelong contact with each rescue.

Italian Greyhounds come to us looking for a new home for various reasons: break up of a relationship, arrival of a new baby, owners not having time for them, perceived behavioural problems, owners moving house, medical reasons or sadly even the loss of their owner.

Some Italian Greyhounds may come with a lot of “baggage” and they may not have beenshown good manners.  Sometimes they may not have been well socialised and they may even have been abused.  Sadly they cannot tell you what they have had to endure.  They will need time, patience and understanding as well as lots of TLC to help them settle into their new home.

Giving a home to an older Italian Greyhound can also be extremely rewarding.  In reality you may only have a short period of time with your new companion, but knowing that you have given a happy, secure and loving home to an Italian Greyhound at perhaps their greatest time of need – what better feeling can you experience.  With a twelve year old Italian Greyhound you could have anumber of very happy years together!

The Italian Greyhound is an adorable dog and due to its fine coat needs to keep warm.  A soft blanket to cuddle into is an absolute must.  Italian Greyhounds are extremely affectionate and love to snuggle up to you or sit on your lap.  They are not dogs to be kept outside as they require a warm environment.

They can take time to bond but once friendship is established they are a sweet natured, delightful and loving companion.  New adopters need to be aware that this breed is intelligent enough to take liberties if allowed to do so.

Italian Greyhounds are in love with life.  Their temperament is generally calm, sensitive, loyal, and very affectionate towards their family.  Their elegance draws a lot of attention.  They are reserved rather than shy, not comfortable at first in the company of strangers but tolerant of them.
